Le quartier
In the 18th century the village of Ostankino belonged to the Sheremetev counts. In the 1790s Nikolai Sheremetev built a palace theatre here for his serf troupe, whose star Praskovia Zhemchugova later became his wife.
In 1939 the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition opened, later to become VDNKh. Its pavilions and fountains are an encyclopaedia of Soviet architecture of the 1930s–1950s.
In 1967 the 540-metre Ostankino TV Tower, designed by engineer Nikolai Nikitin, was completed. It remains the tallest structure in Europe.
