Sobre el distrito
The name comes from the 17th-century Khamovnaya Sloboda, a settlement of weavers who made “khamovnoye” linen cloth. In 1679–1682 the weavers themselves built the ornate Church of St Nicholas in Khamovniki.
In 1524 Vasily III founded the Novodevichy Convent on Devichye Field to commemorate the capture of Smolensk. Its ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
In 1882 Leo Tolstoy bought an estate in Dolgo-Khamovnichesky Lane and spent nearly twenty winters here with his family. In the 20th century the Luzhniki sports complex (1956) rose in the river bend, the main arena of the 1980 Olympics and of the 2018 FIFA World Cup final.
