Where to start

Begin with the historic core: Red Square, the Kremlin, Zaryadye and the embankment show how the city grew from a fortress on a hill. From here it is easy to fan out into the districts — Zamoskvorechye, Arbat, Khamovniki.

Moscow is huge, so pick one or two parts of the city per day. The metro quickly links the centre with VDNKh, Moscow City, Kolomenskoye and Tsaritsyno, while between neighbouring central stations it is often easier to walk.

Practical tips

  • Getting around

One transport card works on the metro, the MCC and surface transport. On the MCD diameters the fare depends on the zone — check before you travel.

  • Navigation

Signs in the metro and on the MCC are duplicated in English, and stations are announced in two languages.

  • Museums

Many museums have a weekly closing day and timed tickets. Buy tickets only on the venues’ official websites.

  • Seasons

In summer the city lives on its embankments and in parks; in winter on skating rinks and festive streets. In spring and autumn bring comfortable waterproof shoes.
