The rings of Moscow
Along the White Town walls
A horseshoe of boulevards rather than a closed ring: both ends meet the Moskva River.
Why chords matter
In a radial-ring city many trips pass through the centre even when they start and end on the outskirts. Chords are roads that connect districts directly, taking pressure off the rings.
The North-West, North-East and South-East chords and the Southern Rokada together form a new framework, crossing the radial highways with multi-level interchanges and running through tunnels under railways.
Elements of a modern road
Interchanges
Multi-level junctions let traffic pass without traffic lights.
Dedicated lanes
Public transport lanes speed up buses and electric buses.
Pedestrian crossings
Footbridges and underpasses link districts on both sides of the highways.
