Trams
The Moscow tram: from the horse tram of 1872 to modern Vityaz and Lvyonok cars, track free of traffic jams and plans for New Moscow.
The tram is the oldest urban mode still running in Moscow. Today it means low-floor cars, track separated from road traffic and lines that link districts without a change in the centre.

From horse trams to electric trams
In 1872 horse trams — rail cars pulled by horses — appeared on Moscow streets. The first electric tram line opened in 1899. Until the metro opened in 1935, the tram remained the city’s main means of transport.

Vityaz cars
Since 2017 three-section low-floor trams of the Vityaz family have entered service. The step-free floor makes boarding easier with a pram, for older passengers and for wheelchair users.
Single-section Lvyonok
Single-section low-floor 71-911EM Lvyonok trams also run on the network — compact cars for lines with fewer passengers. The cover is an artistic illustration of such a car.
No traffic jams
Many lines run separately from road traffic, so trams are not held up in congestion. Where the track runs along a street it is separated by kerbs and given priority at traffic lights.
