The classic first encounter with the historic core.

  • Alexander Garden
  • Red Square
  • Nikolskaya Street
  • Varvarka Street
  • Zaryadye Park

How to prepare

  • Shoes

The centre is paved with cobbles and tiles — comfortable shoes matter more than any guidebook.

  • Breaks

Plan a stop every hour and a half: Moscow has plenty of squares and ground-floor cafés.

  • Getting back

Almost every route ends near a metro station — check which one in advance.

Why Moscow is worth walking

From a car or train the city breaks into separate points. On foot the connections appear: lanes follow old settlements, boulevards trace vanished walls.

In recent years pavements in the centre have been widened and pedestrian zones created, so many routes have become noticeably more comfortable.
